In a torquey turbo car, tall gears work well for most uses with the M46/47. Maybe I should sell one of mine to some triumph perv as an upgrade and make a fortune on that clapped out british junk. I find OD on a manual tranny utterly ghetto even if it works properly and totally fine, which mine did. The economy and frustration of replacing broken volvo trannys, particularly with expensive gearsets and a machined iron case for the larger mainshaft and P-type OD disappears fast. Again, I can't speak for him, but I would have been pretty content to keep the volvo tranny and leave it alone more or less with possibly closer 1-4 gearing if it would hang on. ![]() ![]() I won't speak for JL, but after one breaks a few M46s, something else (in his case jerico I believe and in mine getrag 265 case) with bigger gears, more mainshaft support, less bevel angle on the gears or some combination of those are nice things to have and don't seem that expensive or time consuming after a few M46s give up.
